Australian billionaire donates $10 million to turn over 17,000 acres into a wildlife refuge

When tech investor Mike Gregg and his wife Sue looked at their bank account a few years ago, they made a decision most wealthy people don’t.

They didn’t buy a yacht.

Instead, the couple donated $10 million to purchase six adjoining properties covering 7,000 hectares of former cattle-grazing and logging land in New South Wales, transforming it into one of the largest private conservation reserves in the region.

The land, acquired through the Great Southern Land Conservancy in May 2026, now serves as a protected refuge for koalas, greater gliders, spotted-tail quolls, glossy black cockatoos, and dozens of other threatened species.

This is not a feel-good story about a rich person doing something nice.

It is a story about what happens when private wealth meets ecological urgency, and why that combination is becoming one of the most important forces in wildlife conservation today.

How the Reserve Was Established

He and his wife Sue co-founded the Great Southern Land Conservancy alongside conservationist Atticus Fleming, a former chief of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.

The conservancy was formally launched in late 2024 with a straightforward mission: buy land and protect it forever.

At launch, they had already secured two properties covering more than 3,200 hectares, sheltering over 30 threatened species.

The May 2026 acquisition brought the total to six contiguous properties spanning 7,000 hectares, making it the largest private conservation reserve in the NSW Great Dividing Range.

That range, stretching thousands of kilometres along Australia’s eastern coast, is one of the most biologically rich corridors on the continent.

The land sits southwest of Port Macquarie and had been actively used for cattle grazing and logging until the purchase was finalised.

According to reports in the Sydney Morning Herald, some of the land was still being logged during the final property inspections.

What the Land Looks Like, and Why It Matters

This is not barren scrubland.

The newly protected properties include wet forest, rainforest-edged gorges, rivers, and grassy woodland, creating a patchwork of habitats that many species depend on for shelter, movement, and reproduction.

By linking six adjoining properties near existing protected areas, the conservancy has created a much larger connected corridor for wildlife.

Connectivity matters enormously in conservation.

Fragmented, isolated patches of bush cannot support the same populations as linked stretches of intact habitat, because animals need room to roam, find mates, and recover after fires or drought.

The reserve is expected to host the largest koala population on privately owned land in New South Wales, according to Atticus Fleming, who is leading an intensive koala survey on the site.

The conservancy plans to monitor the land using 280 camera traps, tracking wildlife movement, population health, and the recovery of species across the reserve.

How the Conservation Work Will Be Done

Buying the land was only step one.

The conservancy’s team will focus on fire prevention, weed control, and feral animal management across the properties, alongside restoring areas that were previously cleared.

Feral cats and foxes are among the most destructive threats to Australia’s native mammals, and invasive weeds can choke out native vegetation that wildlife depends on for food and shelter.

Planned burns and firebreaks will help reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire, which has devastated large parts of eastern Australia in recent years.

The 2019 to 2020 bushfire season alone was estimated to have killed more than one billion animals, including at least 5,000 koalas in New South Wales.

The reserve’s design, connecting multiple properties near existing protected land, means wildlife have more room to escape and recover when fires do break out.

Private Money Is Doing What Governments Cannot

Here is what most people get wrong about conservation.

The assumption is that wildlife protection is primarily a government job. National parks, wildlife services, protected area legislation: these are the tools we picture when we imagine nature being saved.

But the reality is far more complicated.

Research published in 2025 found that the effectiveness of protected areas varies widely, and that simply drawing a boundary around land is not enough. According to a study covered by The Conversation, protected areas do not always preserve the complex web of species interactions that keeps ecosystems functioning. Management matters as much as protection.

Meanwhile, government conservation programs in Australia are stretched thin.

The koala was formally listed as endangered in Queensland, New South Wales, and the ACT in February 2022 under Australia’s national environmental law.

Despite that listing, the Australian Conservation Foundation reported that in 2025 alone, the government approved the destruction of nearly 4,000 hectares of koala habitat, the equivalent of four Sydney Airport footprints, without meaningful review.

The law meant to protect nature had failed to stop bulldozers clearing close to 2.3 million hectares of likely koala habitat.

Private conservation, by contrast, moves faster and can be more targeted.

Analysis from the Land Trust Alliance found that all 160 federally endangered mammal, bird, amphibian, and reptile species studied would have enough habitat to survive if currently undeveloped private land were conserved alongside existing public land.

The conclusion is difficult to ignore: the fate of many species may depend more on what private landowners do than on what governments protect.

Why Australia Faces a Particularly Severe Crisis

Australia holds a grim world record.

It has the worst mammal extinction rate on the planet.

The Great Southern Land Conservancy notes that while Australia ranks in the top three countries globally for endemic mammals and birds, and is number one for reptile diversity, it is losing that biodiversity at an alarming rate.

Around 2,000 animal and plant species are currently at risk of extinction in Australia.

The populations of many surviving species have already collapsed to a fraction of their historical numbers.

The koala, that most iconic of Australian animals, is now listed as endangered across its eastern range. Some researchers believe its conservation status in parts of South East Queensland should be upgraded to critically endangered.

Estimates of wild koala numbers vary significantly, but the Australian Koala Foundation suggests there may be fewer than 63,000 individuals remaining in the wild, possibly as few as 38,000.

A government-backed parliamentary inquiry found that koalas could be locally extinct in New South Wales by 2050 without urgent intervention.

The Gregg family’s reserve, if it does harbour the largest koala population on privately held land in NSW as expected, could become one of the most significant refuges for the species anywhere in the country.

How This Project Connects to a Bigger Shift

The Gregg donation is not an isolated act of philanthropy.

It reflects a growing global movement in which private wealth, conservation science, and long-term land management are working together in ways that government programs alone cannot achieve.

The approach being used here, buying land outright and managing it permanently for wildlife, is considered by many ecologists to be the most reliable method for protecting biodiversity at scale.

As Atticus Fleming has argued, buying land and managing it effectively remains the best available tool for reversing the decline of Australia’s wildlife.

The model is also notable for what it is not doing.

The conservancy is not relying on carbon credits or ecotourism revenue to justify its existence.

It is not managing the land for a dual purpose that balances wildlife against productivity.

The goal is straightforward: protect the land forever.

That permanence matters.

Conservation agreements that can be reversed, sold, or renegotiated do not offer the same security as outright ownership.

A reserve that is bought and held in perpetuity by a mission-driven charity is protected from the pressures of politics, market fluctuations, and changes in government policy.

What the Greggs Said About Their Decision

Sue Gregg described the motivation simply.

“We found ourselves in the very fortunate position to do some good,” she told the Sydney Morning Herald. “We love nature and wildlife. So, we thought, preserving and restoring land was the best thing we could do with our money.”

Mike Gregg was equally direct about what this kind of wealth demands.

“We found we had made a bit more money than we ever thought we would, and to us that came with responsibility,” he said. “We’ve got to think about how we’re going to do something with this, and it’s not buying a big yacht.”

The donation is believed to be one of the largest private gifts ever made for land conservation in New South Wales.

Online, the response was immediate.

When the story was shared on Reddit’s r/UpliftingNews community, one of the most upvoted comments read: “This is exactly what I would do, if I were a billionaire.”

Others, though, were quick to note the broader structural problem.

“That’s commendable, but if the system relies on a powerful minority to do the right thing, the system is flawed,” one commenter wrote.

Both responses are right.

The Gregg donation is genuinely admirable, and it will make a measurable difference to thousands of animals.

But it also highlights a gap in public policy that should not need billionaires to fill it.

How This Story Applies to the Rest of Us

Most people reading this will never have $10 million to donate to a wildlife reserve.

But the principles behind what the Greggs have done are worth sitting with.

The first is that scale matters in conservation.

Individual acts of goodwill, planting a few trees, supporting a local wildlife shelter, donating to a charity, are valuable. But landscape-scale protection, the kind that connects fragmented habitats and creates corridors large enough for whole populations to move through, requires a different order of commitment.

The second is that management is as important as protection.

Simply fencing off land and declaring it a reserve is not enough. The Gregg reserve will require active, ongoing investment in fire management, pest control, and ecological monitoring. Without that work, invasive species and feral animals can undo the benefits of protection within a generation.

The third is that private action and public policy need each other.

The Great Southern Land Conservancy is doing extraordinary work, but it cannot buy every threatened landscape in Australia.

Government land-use laws, stronger habitat protections, and better enforcement are still essential.

Private conservation supplements public systems. It does not replace them.

The fourth is perhaps the most personal.

What we do with surplus matters.

Most people with significant wealth never consider using it the way the Greggs have.

The social norm, the default, is to acquire more: bigger homes, more travel, better cars.

What the Greggs did was ask a different question.

Not “what can we buy?” but “what can we protect?”

That question, asked at scale, has the potential to reshape how wealth and nature coexist in the 21st century.

A Reserve That Will Outlast All of Us

When the camera traps start recording footage of koalas moving through the reserve’s rainforest-edged gorges, and when the first surveys confirm a healthy and recovering population, the numbers will tell only part of the story.

The deeper story is about what it means to take responsibility for the world you were lucky enough to benefit from.

Australia has already lost more mammal species than any other country on Earth.

The ones that remain are depending on decisions being made right now, by governments, by scientists, by landowners, and occasionally by a couple from New South Wales who decided a yacht was not the point.

The Great Southern Land Conservancy’s Eaglehawk-Misty Mountains Reserve is, for now, one of the most hopeful places in Australian conservation.

What it becomes over the next 50 years will depend on whether the rest of us take the same question seriously.
